Putting Things In Storage? Stock Up On These Packing Supplies First!

Posted on

Putting some of your things in storage is a great way to clear space in your home and reduce clutter. Plus, if you do find that you need these items again, they'll be easily accessible inside your storage unit. But before you start packing things into boxes and sorting through everything you own, make a trip to your local hardware or home improvement store and stock up on these essential packing supplies.

Tape

Not just any old tape will do. Make sure you buy thick, sturdy packing tape. The kind with strings running down its length is a good choice, as these strings add sturdiness to the tape and will prevent it from tearing when you apply it to the bottoms of heavy boxes.

Markers

Make sure you purchase permanent markers with ink that's guaranteed not to run. This way, if your boxes become damp, you will still be able to read the labels. You may want to consider purchasing several colors of markets so you can label items from different rooms in different colors, making it easier to find what you need when you pull items out of storage.

Packing Paper

While some people use recycled newspaper for packing, the ink can leave marks on items like mugs and clothing. If you don't want ink stains, purchase some plain, brown packing paper to wrap delicate items.

Packing Peanuts

Leaving too much empty space in a box is not a good idea. Stack another box on top of a partially filled box, and the box may collapse, damaging the items inside. Packing peanuts are inexpensive and they provide an easy way to fill boxes and prevent damage.

Plastic Tote Boxes

Some items may be just fine in cardboard boxes, but if you're going to put more delicate items like electronics or jewelry into storage, you'll want to put it in a plastic tote. This way, it will be protected from moisture. Plus, totes are sturdier and less likely to collapse than boxes.

Plastic Sheets

You never know what the weather will be like on the day you move items into your storage unit! Just in case it's raining, you'll want to invest in a few plastic sheets, which you can use to cover items as you transport them to the moving truck and then to the storage unit. If you don't end up needing them, you can likely return them as long as you hold onto the receipt.
