Moving day can be both exciting and exhausting. Before the household movers arrive, you want to ensure that your home is prepared for the big day. Here are several things you can do to prepare.  

Declutter and Clean

A couple of weeks before moving day, you and your family need to go through all of your belongings and toss or donate any items that are no longer needed. Decluttering not only helps to ensure only necessary items make it to the new home, but also helps keep your moving expenses to a minimum. The simple act of decluttering means you need fewer moving supplies and the cost for the movers is lower.  

Cleaning your current home might not be the most fun-filled activity, but it is necessary. The movers will be in and out of your home as they pack your belongings. If your home is decluttered and clean, they can easily move around the home while packing and moving.  

Pack Up Your Personal Items

Items that you are planning to move yourself need to be packed and clearly labeled before moving day. These personal items can include jewelry, clothing, and family photos. You can even move the items to your new home before moving day so you can focus on other chores.  

In addition to packing your personal items, you also need to pack up or get rid of any items that are considered hazardous or restricted by the movers. Prepare Your Appliances

Unless you are leaving all of your appliances in your current home, you need to prepare them for the move. Start the preparation by turning off and emptying anything that is inside of the appliances. Once they are empty, clean them out. Before closing the appliances, allow them to thoroughly dry. 

You also need to tape the power cords to the body of the appliances. Taping them helps to avoid damage and keeps them out of the way of the movers. If you still have the packaging for smaller appliances, such as the microwave, you can place them in the boxes to guarantee their safety during travel.
